Backpacking through Europe in 1994

Day 46 • October 22, 1994
Rødekro, Denmark, Day 2

Today was a good, easy day.

I woke up in Dorte and Anker’s apartment in Rødekro feeling more rested than I had in weeks. After so much time moving from place to place and meeting new people every few days, it felt really nice to just… stay put for a while. No train schedules to chase, no new city to figure out. Just a quiet Saturday with friends.

We took it slow. Dorte and I went shopping in the morning, and later we all went to watch a local soccer match. In the afternoon, Anker and I took a walk through the Pamhule forest while Dorte visited with her friend Lise. It was the kind of unhurried day I didn’t even realize I needed.

That evening we had dinner together and watched a movie. Nothing dramatic happened, and that was kind of the point. It felt good to be somewhere familiar, even if just for a couple of days.

Going Up

This was from the local soccer match in Rødekro. One of the players went hard for a header while the others jostled for position around him. It was a casual weekend game, but the effort was real.

Local Match in Rødekro

Dorte and Anker took me to watch a local soccer match that afternoon. I don’t normally get the chance to photograph sports, so I took the opportunity to practice shooting action. I spent most of the game on the sidelines, trying to capture the movement and intensity of the players.

DAY 46 / 10-22-94
Rødekro, Denmark, Day 2

Today I found out that in Denmark they even have stupid late-night infomercials during the day. This morning I saw Jane Fonda’s Total Body Workout & The Salad Master.

Dorte & I went shopping, then the three of us went to a soccer match. After that we walked through a forest called Pamhule. Then we picked up Dorte’s friend Lise before coming home and eating dinner.

Then we watched “The Russia House.” That move sucked. I thought with Sean Connery and Michelle Pfeifer it would be good but it wasn’t.

Went to bed early because we have to get up at 7:30 tomorrow.
