Backpacking through Europe in 1994

DAY 48 / 10-24-94
Rødekro, Denmark, Day 4
Today was a good day – I watched American TV all day long!
I slept in ‘till 12, and at 1:00 the NBC Today Show was on Live from the US. Like I said before, they have two channels (three if you count MTV) in English, and one of them is called the NBC Super Channel. NBC teamed up with CNBC for this Channel, which, among other European shows, has the Today Show, Geraldo Rivera Live, Rolando Show, Tonight Show with Jay Leno, & NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw, also Live at 12:30am.
So after watching the Today Show, I wrote a letter to Kyle, then at 4:30 there was a show called “NFL Amerikanst Fodbold.” Each week they choose a game, edit it down to 45 minutes, and fill the other 15 minutes with highlights from the other games.
And as luck would have it, the featured game was the Cowboys [my favorite team since childhood] versus the Cardinals!!! Of course it was announced in Danish, but is was great just to see some football.
Afterwards though I came to the realization that it’s not the football I miss, it’s watching football with the guys that I miss.
If this trip has not taught me anything else, it has taught me to appreciate the things that I have.
This is a really valuable lesson when you consider one of the reasons for this trip, at least in the early planning stages, was a form of positive therapy after my suicide attempt.
And although I’m not at all anxious to leave my new – and old – friends here, I’m very anxious to be back home with my friends and family putting my life together.
I’m more confident now about myself than I’ve ever been, and more optimistic. I’m proving my theory that a person can do anything they want if they set their mind to it. And I’m really excited to see what I can accomplish when I return home.
Anyway, after dinner Anker & Dorte left to coach gymnastics. At 7:30 another great surprise came on TV – The Simpsons – in English!! This was the episode about each of the kids’ first words, a really excellent one. But once again, without someone like Kyle or Skratch or Doug or Curt or even Mom or Tammy to watch it with, it just wasn’t quite as funny as I remember it.
At 10:00 was another great show – “Mask”. Not “The Mask” that stupid movie with that idiot Jim Carrey, but the really great old movie with Eric Stoltz and Cher.
Then I finished off my night by watching the live broadcast of NBC Nightly News.
