Backpacking through Europe in 1994

The scarcity of photographs from this day says a lot about how different things were back then. On November 5, 1994, I took just four pictures total. One was with Pernille’s parents before I left Galten, and the other three were from a party that night. One of those didn’t turn out, so I’m left with only three photographs to help me remember the entire day.

That feels almost impossible to imagine now. These days I can take twenty photos of a sunset without thinking twice. But in 1994, every frame mattered. Film was expensive, and I was careful with what I chose to capture.

Looking back, those three photos still manage to hold the feeling of the day — a quiet goodbye with Pernille’s family, followed by a lively party where I met someone new who would unexpectedly shape the next few days of my trip.

Meeting Annette

At a lively party in Aarhus, I met Annette, the dark-haired beauty on the left. We hit it off right away, and before the night was over, she invited me to stay with her for a few days. Her warmth and easy laughter made the invitation feel completely natural.

Smoke and Stillness

I was trying to be more deliberate and artistic with this shot — playing with light, shadow, and composition instead of just documenting the moment. A glass of wine, a burning cigarette, and the quiet aftermath of a good evening. I’m not sure it fully landed the way I hoped, but it still feels like a honest little time capsule of that night.

DAY 60 / 11-05-94
Århus, Denmark

Nothing happened today until Pernille’s sister, Charlotte, picked us up at 2:30 to go to Galten and her parents’ house. Charlotte had just returned from a year in Cincinnati.

We busted out the slide projector and looked at all the slides from Down Under. It was so awesome to see the ones of the tour. God, we had fun. [A highlight of our year as exchange-students in Australia was a three-week bus trip “Tour around Australia” 30 or so exchange students took together.]

Then we watched another exciting episode of Beverly Hills 90210.

We stayed for dinner, and I really enjoyed Pernille’s family.

Then it was off to a party, where I met a very good-looking girl, Annette, who invited me to stay with her a day or two!

We came home, and I tried several times to call home, but there was no answer.
